Woburn Orthopedic Surgeon Accused Of Sexually Assaulting 21-Year-Old Man

A former orthopedic surgeon pleaded not guilty to inviting a 21-year-old man that he knew to his home and sexually assaulting him while he was unconscious, officials said.

James DeVellis, age 56, of Wakefield, is accused of inviting the man over to his Lexington home to finish some work in April of 2020, the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office reports. 

The office alleges that DeVeliis sexually assaulted the man when he lost consciousness at some point during his visit. DeVellis was arraigned on charges of rape and indecent assault and battery in Middlesex Superior Court on Wednesday, Dec. 21, the office reports. 

After being released on personal recognizance, DeVellis was ordered to stay away from the victim, his immediate family and the family's home. DeVellis must also give up his passport. 

DeVellis, who used to work at Excel Orthopedics in Woburn, specialized in Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, according to his profile on WebMD. Boston25 started hearing from alleged victims of DeVellis during his time at the clinic in 2016, the outlet reports.

"Those victims, teenage boys, also shared their complaints with the State Medical Board when they recalled inappropriate touching during their visits with Dr. Devellis," the outlet said.

DeVellis appeared to have left the healthcare field according to a resignation letter filed by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine dated December 22, 2016. 

The former surgeon appeared to move on to real estate, according to his LinkedIn and a management company called Thompson Square Partners

His next day in court is scheduled for Jan. 10, the DA's office reports.
